Care of Convertible Tops

Care of Convertible Tops With proper care, your convertible top can remain looking great, and its lifespan can be extended. There’s not much you can do to reverse damage once it’s already been done. The best course of action is to take care of it from the beginning. The following are suggested care techniques for keeping your convertible top in tip-top condition. Cloth Top Care Fabric top maintenance is essentially the same as vinyl top maintenance, except you want to select products formulated for fabric. Convertible top cleaners are usually suitable for either vinyl or fabric. Use a moderately stiff brush to loosen dirt from the fibers. It’s a marvel of modern science that fabric tops repel water as well as they do, but all good things must come to an end. Fabric tops are chemically treated during manufacturing to repel water and contamination, but these chemicals diminish as time.. Read More

Care of Mohair Auto Upholstery

Mohair fabric was used for auto upholstery in many vehicles of the 1930’s and ’40’s, and is often the fabric of choice for our customers when ordering a LeBaron Bonney or Hampton Coach Upholstery Kit. What is Mohair Fabric? Mohair fabric is silk-like and made from the hair of the Angora goat. Durable, resilient, and exceptionally soft, mohair is notable for its high luster and sheen, which has helped give it the nickname the “Diamond Fiber”. Mohair takes dye exceptionally well. Mohair automotive fabrics have a pile woven from an extra set of yarns that interlace with the warp and the weft. They have a tight weave and a short pile so that they will wear well and resist crushing. Mohair Fabric Care Do not allow dust and dirt build-up to become excessive, otherwise it will be more difficult to remove. Upholstery fabrics should be cleaned regularly to ensure prolonged life and.. Read More

Our Stitch Styles and What They Mean to You

When ordering your LeBaron Bonney Interior you may be presented with a choice of “stitch styles”. Most people aren’t familiar with the term “stitch styles”. They might be thinking “is that like cross stitch, or embroidery, or a zig-zag stitch like my mom did with her sewing machine?” Actually, when we refer to stitch styles it is the construction and appearance of seat faces, which are the center sections of the seat, as opposed to the border. The diagram below will help you visualize this. LeBaron Bonney offers four stitch styles: Flat Material – It’s just like it sounds – a flat panel of fabric, leather, or vinyl. The only stitching is around the perimeter of the fabric where it attaches to the borders. Heat-Sealed Channel Quilted Vinyl – This gives a vinyl face pleats and is produced by sandwiching batting, that is specialized for the heat sealing process, between.. Read More

Upholstering the Trunk of a ’32 Ford Highboy

The EZ Way To Do Upholstery Written by Carroll Hamilton Now You See it Now You Don’t A few years back we upholstered our ’32 Ford highboy using an EZ Boy upholstery kit by LeBaron Bonney. Since it was a driver we never bothered to upholster the trunk. The idea was we could just throw our tools, chairs, and spare tire in the trunk and not worry about tearing up the upholstery. Recently we updated the car with new paint, chrome wheels, and wide whites. Since the EZ Boy interior was still in great shape, we only replaced the carpet. However, tiring of everyone looking in the trunk when we opened it only to see a stack of “stuff”, we decided to upholster the trunk as part of the overhaul. The key issue was where to go with all of the stuff. After some thought, and a few sketches, a.. Read More
